While out searching for a chainsaw, we have a tendency to look at the brands that really pop out for us, and some of us may not know about XtremePower. This is the brand that sits in the corner screaming “I’m a high quality tool, give me a chance.” I have known professionals that have given the XtremePower brand a chance and loved the power nesting behind the tool.
In this particular review, I’d like to talk about the XtremePowerUS 22” 2.4 HP 45 cc Gas 2-stroke chainsaw.
With the XtremePower chainsaw, you’re going to have both speed and quality. Of course, I cannot say that this chainsaw is going to suit every single person out there, because we all have different features that we like. Continue reading this review in order to see if this is the chainsaw you really want …
Bar Length – Of course, you’re going to want to know about the bar length before you make the purchase. The bar length is 22”, which is decent for a chainsaw. With this bar length, you should be able to cut through harder, thicker logs easily. Later on, if you want to install a replacement chain that is longer, it is possible.
Engine Size – This particular chainsaw has a 45cc gasoline engine that is responsible for powering it. This type of engine has been designed for maximum power – up to 2.5 HP. Don’t worry though, because the carbon emissions are on the low side, and it doesn’t burn through fuel like you’d think it would. The engine size makes it great for not only amateurs that need to cut limbs and trees around their home, but also for business owners that want to save money and care about keeping the environment clean.
Kickback and Chain – If this is your first time using a chainsaw or if you have never used a gas-powered chainsaw before, you may be in for a surprise when you discover the amount of power this chainsaw puts out. You may even experience your first kickback due to the power if you go too fast. Yes, the chainsaw has been designed in order to minimize kickback, but this doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen, so you should be careful every time you use the chainsaw.
Clean Air Intake System – The clean air intake system is definitely a good feature. With this feature, you won’t have to worry about dust particles or large debris getting into the engine and ruining the saw. This ensures that the engine will operate for a long time without breaking.
Eco Boost Engine – The engine has reduced emissions and fuel consumption, but at the same time, it has increased power. It has enough power to be able to cut through hardwoods like Oak trees and we all know how tough old oak trees can be.
Lightweight – Since this chainsaw is light in weight, it is also easy to handle. This means that you will be able to use the chainsaw without feeling exhausted after a short period of time. The last chainsaw I had was super heavy, and after about 15 minutes of using it, I began to feel the heaviness.
Anti-Vibrating Design – The anti-vibrating design is a feature that many of us can appreciate. If you are familiar with chainsaws and have used one that doesn’t have an anti-vibrating design, I’m certain you know what I’m talking about here. I’ve used a chainsaw that didn’t have the anti-vibrating design and it left my hands feeling as if they were shaking, even after I was done using the saw.
Tank Capacity – The chainsaw has an oil capacity of 0.25 liters, which is decent. It may seem small, but it is good for a chainsaw like this because it doesn’t consume fuel at a rapid rate.
Design and Construction
This chainsaw is made from hard plastic and aluminum and it has a nice solid feel to it. It is obvious that it has been designed to be able to use in extreme environments. The chainsaw has a handguard and the handle in the back has a throttle interlock lever that is located on the top of the handle, along with a throttle trigger. On the right hand side, on the front handle, there’s a throttle lock button – this, along with the interlock lever and the trigger are part of the starting process.
Located on the left side, you’ll discover the gas tank filler cap – in order to fill the chainsaw up with gas, all you have to do is unscrew this by hand. It’s easy to do, so you’re not going to have any problems when it comes to filling the tank up.
At the front of the power head, there’s the oil reservoir cap – like the gas tank cap, it has the screw on/off feature. The front of the handle gets in the way when it comes to getting to the oil reservoir cap, but that’s not that big of an issue.
Located on the left side of the power head, there’s the starter pull knob, which is made of plastic.
The plastic front hand guard and half-wrap handle is located at the front of the power head. The guard comes in handy due to the fact that it will protect your hand, and it also works as a chain brake. Attached to the front of the power head, there’s bumper spikes, which come in handy for stabilizing the saw while it’s in use.
When it comes to accessing the spark plug, engine cylinder, and air filter, it’s fairly easy – these can be accessed by taking the unit cover off of the powerhead. In order to remove the cover, all you have to do is unscrew the large button (this can be done by hand).
This saw comes with a user manual (easy to read and understand), a scabbard for the guide bar, wrench, screwdriver and a file that can be used to sharpen the chain.
To give you an idea of how light the saw is, it weighs around 16 pounds. The 22 inch bar is great for cutting through thick wood.
Cutting with XtremePowerUS chainsaw – Performance and Handling
The XtremePower chainsaw is designed to be able to take on light and medium work, making it ideal to use around your backyard. This 22 inch chainsaw should be able to cut through logs that are up to 20 inches in diameter in one pass.
When it comes to handling the chainsaw, it isn’t super heavy, which is surprising to me because many gas powered chainsaws are on the heavy side. With that said, it’s pretty easy to maneuver and isn’t hard to control.
Power – There is a good amount of power nesting behind this chainsaw. In fact, it has more kick to it than some would expect, making it perfect to use to cut down hard, heavy or thick trees. Considering the amount of power in this saw, I was surprised to find that there is no loss of control.
Design – When it comes to handling this chainsaw, it’s fairly comfortable and I must say, it’s easy to get started and even though it has a high-powered design, it does good around corners.
Safety – When it comes to chainsaws, or any power tools for that matter, I always pay attention to the safety features. Looking at this chainsaw from XtremePower, it is obvious that they designed it with safety in mind. It has the normal safety features you’d find on a chainsaw, which is good. This includes the chain lock feature, allowing you to lock the chainsaw when you aren’t using it and the traditional on/off switch. It also includes a chain catcher, guard and a safety throttle. Basically, it has everything you’d expect to find on a chainsaw, so it certainly isn’t lacking.
Chain Oil System
I was happy to find that the Xtremepower chainsaw has an automatic chain oiling system. If you’re not familiar with chainsaws, this means that you do not have to stop what you’re doing in order to manually oil the chain while you’re using it. Before you use the chainsaw each time, I recommend checking to make sure the oiler is working. You can also adjust the amount of oil that you want to be released by turning a screw that is located on the power heads clutch side. This feature gives the user the opportunity to release the amount of oil needed depending on working conditions.
You can easily add oil to the reservoir. It doesn’t have a window that shows the oil levels, so it’s not easy to check. For this reason, you need to keep an eye on the amount of oil you have in the saw and regularly check it.
As far as the type of oil you should use, the manufacturer recommends SAW#10-#30. If you’re looking to get better cutting performance, in the summer time, SAE#30-#40 is recommended and during the winter, SAE#20.
With this chainsaw, if you wish, you can change out the chain. Let’s take a look at the additional chains you may want to use.
The Super Full Skip Chain – This type of chain is designed for high-speed cutting. Many contractors that are looking to speed through their work choose to use this type of chain.
The Standard Replacement Chain – If you plan on using your chainsaw around the house for light work, then there is nothing wrong with using the standard replacement chain.
The Full Chisel Chain – If you’re looking for more power and don’t care too much about speed, then this would be the chain to use. It’s great to use on wood that is super hard to cut through or when you need to make an extremely clean cut on wood that is on the soft side.
Pros and Cons
Air Filter – The chainsaw has an air-filter that filters through any debris that the chainsaw creates while you’re using it. This is a great feature, because it ensures that the gas fumes or emissions are low so that you will be able to focus on the work you’re doing.
Heavy Duty – This is a heavy duty chainsaw that can take on tough jobs due to the 22-inch bar.
Fuel Consumption – Many are happy with the fact that the chainsaw doesn’t take a whole lot of fuel to run it.
Eco-Friendly – Yes, this chainsaw is eco-friendly due to the fact that it doesn’t emit much gas. The chainsaw is EPA approved.
Easy to Use – The chainsaw is easy to use. The anti-kickback chain design definitely comes in handy and I know many of you will enjoy the anti-vibration feature.
Clean Air Intake – It has a clean air intake system installed on the chainsaw. This system has been designed so that dust and large debris doesn’t reach the engine.
Affordable – If you’re looking for a chainsaw that is affordable, then this one should definitely be at the top of your list.
Powerful – The 2.4 HP motor is powerful.
Easy to Start – This chainsaw is super easy to start.
Of course, where there are pros, there are going to be cons. You can have one of the best machines on the block, but nothing is perfect. So, let’s take a look at the cons and see if they break this deal …
Heat Directed to the Handle – If you were to use this chainsaw for hours on end, the plastic handle could start to melt. This is because the exhaust actually directs heat towards the handle. The solution here would be to let the chainsaw rest for a bit between uses and don’t use it for hours at a time. Besides, you should be taking breaks here and there and shouldn’t use a chainsaw for hours.
Assembly – When you take this chainsaw out of the box, you’re going to discover that there is a considerable amount of assembly that is require.
The Xtremepower is a great chainsaw that is well made and has a good price and is great for a homeowner. If you have trees in your backyard, even if they’re those big oak trees, the chainsaw will be able to cut through them. The chainsaw is light in weight, so you’re not going to get exhausted after using it for a little period of time and the anti-vibration feature is definitely a plus.
