Starting out, I’d like to tell you a bit about SKIL and why they are such a popular brand. Back in 1924, Michel Electric Handsaw Co. was founded by 2 of its owners- Joseph Sullivan and Edmond Michel. Edmond Michel left the business in 1926, and that is when the companies name was changed to “SKIL.” SKIL is a well-known producer of heavy-duty saws like this one that I’m about to tell you about. SKIL is the mastermind behind the first circular saw in the world, the Model 77, and today, it is still in production. They produce many high-quality products such as tackers, cordless power tools, sealant guns, mixers, belt sanders, and so on and today, I’m going to introduce you to one of their best – the SKIL 3540-02.

An Introduction to the SKIL 3540-02 7-inch Wet Tile Saw

This is a wet tile saw, obviously, and this means that it uses the diamond-coated blades. The saw is corded and it weighs a total of 17.7 pounds. It is capable of supporting tiles that measure up to 12×12 inches. To cut tiles, it uses a 7-inch cutting blade and is capable of cutting tiles from 0 to 45 degrees.

The adjustable rip fence combined with the miter gauge makes it so that you will get exact measurements and perfect cuts. Something that’s really cool about this saw is the blade cooling water reservoir that it had – not only does this help cool down the blade when it’s heated up, but it also helps discard dust and debris while working.

The Power

When it comes to power, the SKIL 3540 has you covered. This saw is rated 120V AC only and has an amperage of 4.2 and a no-load rotation per minute of 3600. With this motor, you will be able to cut through different types of material such as masonry, stone, and much more.

When you purchase your brand new saw, you want something that’s going to last for many years to come, and this is why it is important to do your research before you make the purchase. With this saw, I believe it will last for many years because it uses a stainless steel table that is extremely strong and it is also rust and corrosion-resistant.

The blade that is used on this tile saw is coated in diamond power, making it so that it can cut through wet tile easily. Take it from me, this type of blade isn’t going to let you down.

This saw has a nice adjustable rip fence, so you will be able to fit the tile perfectly, making for a nice clean cut, and you won’t have to shift it any. The miter gauge that is provided with this saw makes it so that you can make precise measurements and cut at perfect angles.

As you know, when it comes to cutting tile, even if you’re an inch off, it isn’t going to fit right, so you’ll be thankful for these two features. This feature will give you the opportunity to cut materials in a variety of different styles.

With this saw, you will receive:

  • 1 7-inch blade
  • Blade wrenches
  • a Blade guard
  • The saw itself (of course)

Additional Features

Easy to Clean – Since it’ s a wet tile saw, it obviously has a water reservoir. The water reservoir will help you keep the blade cool while you’re using it. Even more, it will wash and clean the debris off while you’re cutting.

Tile Saw Blade – As I previously mentioned, this saw comes with a 7-inch Diamond Blade, making for smooth and fast cutting each and every time.

Cutting Quality – For accurate miter and straight cuts each time, there’s a miter gauge that is provided and there is also an adjustable rip fence.

Corrosion Free – Yes, this saw is corrosion-free. The top of the table is made of stainless steel that is corrosion-resistant. It can also support tiles that are up to 12×12 inches.

Cutting Angle – With this aw, you can also make bevel cuts at any angle from 0 to 45 that you need.

Additional Accessories – This saw comes with additional accessories that will come in handy like the Carbide circular saw blades that will help enhance the performance.

  • The price is super affordable – it’s much better than having to hire a professional to get the job done.
  • The diamond blade makes the saw versatile and great for small-sized tiles. It is capable of cutting through any form of household tiles and it can also cut through natural stones that are small in size.
  • It comes with a nice 3-year warranty as long as you register the saw within 1 month of purchasing it.

  • Since it’s not expensive at all, you shouldn’t expect the same features as the higher quality saws.
  • It’s a tad bit on the small size when compared to some of the other wet tile saws that are currently on the market. However, this isn’t really that big of a deal.

Point blank, if you’re looking for a good wet tile saw for your household project and you want something that doesn’t have an expensive price tag stamped on it, yet can get the job done, then this 7-inch wet tile saw is a great choice for you. It’s great for those that have household DIY tasks that they would like to get done, and beginners shouldn’t have a problem learning how to use it.

Best Rated Wet Tile – SKIL 3550-02

This is similar to the previously discussed SKIL 3540, but with a bit more power so that it can cut through tougher tiles. It’s still a 7-inch wet tile saw but it has a more powerful motor at 7.0 amp.

Another added feature of the SKIL 3550-02 is that it uses a unique Hydrolock Water Guard that basically prevents water from splashing all over your floor or work area. It’s useful if you want less clean up after your job.

If you are cutting larger tiles up to 18 x 18 then you will need the SKIL 3550-02 as the 3540-02 only cuts tiles up to 12 x 12.

In my opinion, the few dollars more for the SKIL 3550-02 is going to be worth it, it still comes in at under 300 and its extra features are going to make tile cutting a lot easier.

For those of you that are searching for a good wet tile saw that is light in weight and can be used for smaller jobs, then the RIDGID 7″ portable job site wet tile saw might just be a suitable option for you.

The Design – Built-in Handles

Since this is a 7-inch model, you shouldn’t expect this to be the saw you’re going to be able to use for every single job. As far as the design goes, it is very light in weight and it also has handles on it, which will make it even easier for you to carry around.

Anti-Splash System

I also want to mention the anti-splash system, which I feel comes in handy. I noticed that many of the newer wet tile saws on the market mention keeping the splash down, and RIDGID is the one that delivers on that promise. When using the saw, there’s very little water that escapes. In fact, I don’t think you’d have a problem using this in the room you’re working it. Just make sure you place a drop cloth under it so that it can capture the little drops that manage to get out – this will also make cleanup easier.

Won’t Overfill

The nice design will also prevent you from putting too much water in the reservoir. If you even try to put too much water in the reservoir, it’s just going to spill out.

Additional Features

  • Roll cage design that will add extra protection
  • Clear splash hood so that you will be able to see the blade and also the cut line
  • The table support can be detached for tiles that are up to 24 inches
  • TrueLock T-square design will ensure that the cuts will keep the cuts square
  • There’s also an onboard blade wrench storage, so you’ll always have them within your reach
  • Tilting bevel table so you can make 22.5 degrees and 45-degree bevel cuts

  • Light in weight
  • Highly portable
  • Easy to transport
  • Super clean for a wet tile saw
  • 6.5-amp motor that is capable of cutting through grade 4 porcelain tile

  • This saw doesn’t have a sliding table, so there’s going to be some limitations

All in all, if you’re looking for a simple wet tile saw that is light in weight and easy to transport, then I highly recommend this one. This tile saw is great for beginners and those that have DIY projects around the house.

Do I Need a Wet Saw to Cut Tile?

Wet saws can be used to cut tile that is made of a harder material. Wet tile saws come with diamond blades, which are capable of cutting the hardest tile. If you’re cutting something like glass tile, then the wet saw is a must.

How do You Use a Wet Tile Saw and Why are they Wet?

To use the wet tile saw, you’ll need to fill the water pump with water. The wet saw has a blade that is covered in small diamonds that spin quickly so that they can cut through the tough material. The water pump in the saw is important when cutting through a tile that is hard or dense (this includes porcelain tile) because the water will prevent the saw from heating up and smoking.

Which wet tile saw is the best? When looking for the best wet tile saw under 300, I’d say that you could choose any of them from this list, because in my book, they are all the best, or they wouldn’t be on this list.
