Best Hybrid Table Saw – Everything You Need to Know Before Buying

What is a Hybrid Table Saw?

This is a popular question that I figured I would cover in the beginning. Long story short, a hybrid table saw is a stationary table saw. The hybrid table saw looks a lot like a top of the line cabinet maker saw, but the motor is inside of the cabinet, and the internals look more like a contractor saw. So basically, what you have is a combination of a contractor saw and a cabinet maker saw.

Cabinet maker saws usually have a 3hp motor and are heavy and sturdy. The saw mechanisms are inside the cabinet base, but with hybrid table saws, they are normally bolted to the bottom of the table. Essentially, a hybrid table saw is a contactor saw that has a stand and is fully enclosed with the motor on the inside instead of being on the back. In my opinion, this style makes the saw more convenient to work with, but on the same note, it is more difficult to move.

What to Look for in a Hybrid Table Saw

If you’re new to the world of hybrid saws, as with any other product on the market, you don’t want to go out there and buy the first item you “think” is good. You should always educate yourself before making new purchases. Do you know what you should be looking for in a hybrid saw? Here, let me help you get started …

Power

Oh yes, power is definitely something you’re going to want to pay attention to. When looking for a good hybrid saw, let’s think about what type of projects you’ll be taking on. What do you plan on doing most of the time with the saw?

Do your projects consist of ripping hardwood that is no more than an inch thick? Do you plan on ripping through thick maple a lot? These are definitely questions you need to ask yourself.

Safety Features

Safety features are surely something you don’t want to skip out on, especially when it comes to saws. Table saws have a dangerous nature nesting behind them, so you need to take a special look at the safety features before you buy it.

Most saws currently on the market will have what is referred to as a riving knife in order to prevent kickbacks from happening. Kickbacks are one of the main causes as to why people get hurt when working with a table saw. Apart from preventing kickbacks, you may be able to find other safety features such as blade guards.

The Size

Of course, the size of the hybrid table saw is something you’re going to have to take into consideration, especially if you have a woodshop that is small in size.

Mind you, your woodshop may be small, but this doesn’t mean you have to skip out on a table saw – there are many table saws out there that would work out in a small woodshop. Whatever you do, just make sure the saw you get can fit in the space you have available.

Quality

Is the fence good? The quality of the fence is something you need to look into – you need a high quality fence on the saw. The saw you choose should also have a high quality belt system so that you don’t have to deal with power loss and slippage issues.

Dust Collection System

How about the dust collection system on the saw?  Some people actually forget to check out the dust collection system when they purchase the saw, only to take it home and find that the dust collection is a problem.

Dust collection is a big problem with saws, especially the lower quality ones. At the least, there should be a 4-inch dust port. If the saw doesn’t have proper dust collection, you will have to deal with aggravating cleanup issues, and on top of this, you will be putting your health at risk.

The Assembly Process

All of those amazing bells and whistles aren’t going to matter all that much if you’re not able to put the table saw together properly. The assembly process should be simple, and the instructions should be easy for you to understand. Even the slightest mistake can cause an accident …it can make the saw very dangerous.

Price

Yes, I know, the price point is probably at the top of your list, especially if you’re on a budget. Just remember to shop around and compare prices. Many choose to go for a hybrid table saw due to the fact that a full-size cabinet saw costs way too much, and that is perfectly understandable.

Dust Control

Dust control is an important factor that you need to consider when looking into buying a new hybrid table saw. How and where the dust goes while you’re working is important because the last thing you want is for the dust to fly all in the air.

If you breathe the dust in, it can be harmful to your health. For this reason, you should look for a model that produces less dust, or one that has a good dust collector. Either way you go, it is important that the dust isn’t being released into the air, so if the table saw doesn’t have a dust port, just make sure it doesn’t produce a lot of dust.

Safety Guards

Yes, safety guards are important, because you want to be safe when you’re working around saws and sharp knives, right?

Accidents do happen, and you want to make sure you do everything you can in order to prevent them. There are some hybrid models out there that have safety guards that insure the users safety.

Table saws that have a quick-release system are great. You should also make sure the saw has separate riveting knives – these knives help prevent kickback when you’re working with the saw and of course, a saw with a blade guard is a suitable choice.

Riving Knife

The riving knife is an important feature that I recommend for your safety. A riving knife helps prevent kickbacks …kickbacks are what causes most of the saw injuries.

Amperage

Most hybrid table saws out there have 15 Amp motors. That is powerful enough for most DIY projects. Amperage influences the power of the saw, so you need to know what you’re getting. HP and amperage are equally important, so make sure you look at both.

Uses for Hybrid Table Saws

For DIY projects and woodworking around your home, a hybrid table saw is a great option, and it’s an even better option if you choose a good saw (I’ll be giving you a list of hybrid table saws to choose from). Hybrid table saws can do the same light commercial and residential jobs as a cabinet saw can. They are great for wood craft projects and even making cabinetry.

With a hybrid table saw, there are so many different things you can make, like furniture for your home. You can make chairs, tables, cabinets, desks, bookshelves, and so much more.

If you’re looking for a portable hybrid table saw, then I would point you towards the Bosch 10-Inch Worksite table saw. Mind you, this may be portable, but don’t let that fool you because it is quite powerful.

Power

This is a 15-Amp saw that is capable of delivering 4.0 of max HP and 650 RPM. This is more than enough power that is required for rip-cutting, cross-cutting, ripping, and cutting through rough-carpentry lumbar. The table saw is able to handle materials that are up to 25-inches wide.

Adjustable

The height of this saw is adjustable. This means that you can adjust the table based on the project at hand.

Cast Aluminum Top

The big cast aluminum top is a real eye catcher, but that’s not all there is to it. The ripping capacity in 25 inches, which is a decent coverage.

Wheeled Stand

The wheeled stand is what makes this hybrid saw portable. This is perfect if you need mobility on a jobsite.

Soft Start Circuitry

The soft start circuitry reduces the risk of tripping your circuit breaker.

Smart Guard System

Anti-kickback and riving knife offers protection, while the guard assembly makes for a good barrier to stop blade contact.

Rip Fence

The square lock rip fence is a good feature that is worth mentioning. This makes for precision and accuracy.

Portable

To give you an idea of how portable this hybrid table saw is – it only weighs 60 pounds, which is really good. The dimensions are 39×29.75×21 inches.

Pros

  • Precision and accuracy
  • Adjustable
  • 0 HP
  • Portable and Collapsible

Cons

After putting this saw under a microscope, the only thing that I could find would be the fact that it shouldn’t be used on a heavy duty construction site, which is perfectly understandable.

Having a portable hybrid table saw is great. When it’s all said and done, you can store the saw in your shed or garage when it’s not being used.

Grizzly G0715P Bear Series – Most Efficient Hybrid Table Saw

Grizzly G0690 Cabinet Table Saw with Riving Knife, 10-Inch
Click image to see latest price on Amazon

When I think about an efficient hybrid table saw, the first one that pops up in my mind would be the Grizzly G0715P Bear Series. Like most hybrid saws on the market, this one has the benefits of a cabinet saw and contractor saw. The size and portability comes from the contractor saw, while the dust control and additional features come from the cabinet saw.

Best of Both Worlds

This hybrid table saw stands out from the crowd due to the fact that it offers the best of both worlds. What I’m saying is that it’s a true hybrid saw and it has a large amount of additional features nesting behind it.

Quick Change Blade Guard

Like most Grizzly saws, this one has a quick-change blade guard, which helps increase safety while you’re using it. It also has the anti-kickback pawls that you can put away from your work.

Fence System

The fence system is easy glide. It also features what is referred to as a CamlocAk fence, making for even more accuracy.

Silent Operation

The Grizzly G0715P has a serpentine belt, which not only makes it powerful, but you’ll also notice that it is quiet while it’s running.

Powerful

This powerful hybrid table saw has a 2HP motor.

Pros

  • Quiet
  • Easy to Use
  • Portable
  • Powerful Motor
  • Riving Knife
  • Low Dust
  • CamlocAk Fence
  • Serpentine Belt

Cons

The assembly may be a bit on the complicated side. The assembly process may take a couple of hours, so be prepared for this.

The price may also be a downside of this hybrid saw for some of my readers.  However, the saw is worth the investment.

When it comes to power, it isn’t super powerful, but it isn’t weak either. I’d say that it nests somewhere between powerful and weak. Yes, the 2HP motor will do a fine job, but I wouldn’t go using it for dense wood.

Safety

Safety on this saw is decent. The design is great, and the accuracy is okay. The materials that were used to make this saw are sturdy, reliable, and from what I can tell, able to withstand a large amount of stress. So, if you’re a professional, you’re going to love this saw as it should meet your expectations as far as performance goes.

Dust Collecting

This model has a nice dust-collecting port. Yes, many of the other hybrid saws have a dust collecting port, but in all honesty, they’re for aesthetical purposes. This one, on the other hand, actually works pretty good and as an additional bonus, you won’t have to buy an expensive vacuum.  Instead, you can take any affordable vacuum and hook it into the port, and it should do what it needs to do.

If you’re searching for a good hybrid table saw, then the G0715P might just be a suitable option for you. It has everything you need for processing wood that is of any density, without giving you much troubles. It is also efficient and precise, making it great for DIYers.

In this day and age, versatile machines aren’t exactly easy to find and most saws are overprices and aren’t made of the high quality materials they should be. When you’re buying a table saw, you want to make sure you’re buying the one that is the most suitable for you – one of the most versatile hybrid table saws I’ve seen is the Ridgid R4512.  This particular table saw weighs in at 117 pounds and is 47x29x24 inches.

This machine has a 15 Amp motor that is powerful and runs smoothly. Without a whole lot of hassle, you will be able to cut through wood.

The stability is decent – it has two legs and a wheeled base. The tabletop area is great and provides a good amount of space.  Thanks to the wheels, the Ridgid R4512 is pretty portable.

As far as safety goes on this model, I’d say it’s safe. There’s a transparent blade guard on it, which makes it so that you can see exactly what’s going on while using it. The anti-kickback system has also been proven to be effective.
